For someone who loves getting photos taken, I actually get really shy when Jacob takes my picture. I don’t know why. It’s kind of silly.

I was really excited about this dress that I bought at Cure Thrift Shop yesterday, and couldn’t help but try it on immediately and run around the apartment for a few hours… so I let Jacob take some photos.

I LOVE this dress. Such an amazing find. Seriously. I’m still trying to feel it out as far as whether I’m going to make any alterations to it (i.e. cut it up and make it all bianca badass). I might just leave it as is… it’s got that great 70’s disco vibe that would make my mother proud.

There used to be this distinction of ‘Runway’ to ‘Real Way’. I don’t know if it’s the times, or if it’s living in NY but I feel like these rules are a bit no holds barred. There are girls out there who can pull off this look (and do) and the girls out there who go out with girls who can pull off this look… but it’s so easy to forget that there are the girls out there who wouldn’t ever actually SEE girls wearing this look in the flesh. I don’t know where this is going… stream of consciousness…

Anyway, THIS is a sneak peek of one of the looks in Topshop’s a/w ‘09 Marianne Collection, inspired by 70’s groupies. I do love the bands and I do love the 70’s, but I’m more into channelling the disco girl (i.e. Bianca Jagger). Actually… the more I look at this picture I don’t think I could even pull off any part of this outfit. It still looks awesome on the model tho… and probably on my friend Sass. Finding a cute and stylish laptop bag is hard. I’ve attempted at a few “colorful” yet functional ones in the past… but they still weren’t stylish enough for my taste.

This Jalda Cargo Computer Bag has to be the prettiest and most functional that I’ve seen. I LOVE that shade of pink and all of those pockets (organization is key after all).

I love the way that Elizabeth & James presents their collection on their website. At one point in my life I had spreadsheet of photos of each item of clothing that I owned. Sort of as an inventory and to easily put looks together… it was very Clueless. This was also at a time when I had a closet with a built in organizing system (cubbies, shelves, and racks)… again, very Clueless (although it didn’t rotate). Unfortunately NYC has not been very good to me in the closet department, but one day I will be able to have that again.

My anecdote aside, this is a great look.

I want the kimono tee in this outfit. Deep V’s are my favorite… otherwise I just feel a little constrained (hate crew necks which is why I end up cutting t-shirts off the shoulder style).
The chain necklace keeps the deep v from looking too smutty.
Tap pants = the girly version of denim cutoffs.
Blazers and shorts are hot.
Oh… and that Pony is MONEY.

Off the Cuff(s)

Here they are. The infamous mini-handcuffs. The handcuffs which marked the latter half of 2008. My go-to necklace. I had two sets. One of my best friends T.S. borrowed one for good luck, gave it back, then my ex-nonboyfriend “borrowed” it as well and never returned it (and then stopped wearing them around me so I couldn’t take them back). Lucky for me I had the other set. Which were actually broken, but I pieced back together so I wouldn’t be cuffless.

2008 ended… I gave up the cuffs as a symbol of freeing myself from any constraints of ‘08 that weighed me down. XNBF still has the other set, which I, after careful deliberation, have decided I do NOT want back. And these… well they’ve taken on a new meaning, hanging from a string tied around someone’s neck who I realized I couldn’t live without.

Onesies, Twosies, Threesies, Four.

Huge fan of the Shipley & Halmos Designer Invitation collection at Uniqlo. All the pieces are really simple, basic, and are great silhouettes and styles for transitioning between day and night. (seriously, I don’t know how many times I’ve been caught out at night wearing a day outfit and it just NOT working for me… like “Oh hai, I’m wearing my ‘I was at the park today’ white eyelet dress, and now in a sea of black and leather at the Collective Hardware Gallery. Meh.”)

I really fell in love with this onesie, in particular. Onesies are my weakness (I’m wearing one right now). Definition of the waist is kind of crucial. Otherwise you can look like a blobby mess. The gold zipper = sexy projection control. This is so disco I can’t even stand it. I could totally channel Bianca Jagger in this little thing.

Tell me about it… stud. Yea that was a Grease throwback....

Yea that was a Grease throwback. ANYWAY. The dress.

I love this Double Dutch Jumper Dress by Obey, because it’s actually perfect for girls who are tiny and are lacking a bit in the chest area (i.e. me). With that low scoop, I couldn’t really imagine a lot of cleavage action working. The straps with the studs, would offer just the right amount of coverage, making it sexy but not slutty.

The belt and the pockets just push it over the edge for me.

Personal preference: rings that span more than one finger. If it only works on one, it doesn’t belong on your finger, it belongs on a chain around your neck.

Enter the Entry Lock Double Finger Ring by Little Rooms. This LA based accessory line describes their jewelry as having “a classy vs. a modern feel”. I would agree with that statement. This has got to be one of the prettiest double finger rings I’ve ever seen. It comes in both silver and gold… and though I usually have an affinity for silver, I think gold wins this one.

(*of course as one who bro’s it out I show affection by punching boys’ arms and such… which is why I love this even more)

Are we human or are we dancer?

I don’t generally excercise. I dance. Ballet was the only physical exertion I subjected myself to when growing up (unless you count my cheerleading days… but even then I basically did it because it was the only sport in HS that involved dancing, to some effect). I often wore my dance gear out in some way or other- wrap sweaters as cardigans, my leotards instead of tanks, dance tights under dresses, etc. (actually, I still do)

I love Stella McCartney’s Adidas line because she really does take style in dancewear to the next level. These warm up shorts would be great over a leotard and tights for the studio, and can be worn EXACTLY the same way out in public… with either ballet flats or boots. The suspenders are a great touch- which I would totally use with other outfits as well.

I feel the same way about pieces in her yoga, tennis, and golf lines. It’s really all about making full use of your wardrobe and allowing your clothing to transcend different parts of your life creatively.

The Un-promise Ring: Vane 2 Finger Brass Knuckle ring

Luna and I stopped by the Vane for Sabago Pop-up Shop Opening last night, which was basically my introduction to the line. This two finger brass knuckle ring, from their fall 08 capsule collection is (say it with me now)… Ah-Mazing.

There are a few things about the ring that make it (at least for me):

The encryptions on the ring, “New York” and the words “Nothing Promised”, is a tribute to the unpredictability of this city.
I do love brass knuckles
As a self declared commitment-phobe this is a badass alternative to the relationship tied “promise ring”… rather an UN-promise ring. It’s like a caveat… I promise you nothing. :)

Anyway, if you catch yourself in the Lower East Side, check out the shop at 125 Rivington… right next to Welcome to the Johnson’s. You can check out the jewelry and the Vane for Sabago shoes… and then stop in next door for a PBR and a game of pool or pacman. Visit the Vane site for updates and webisodes about the shop. (I think it might be down right now, but hopefully it will be up and running again soon)

As a random aside I ran into Brass Knuckles (the person) last night, who I haven’t talked to in a year, somewhat mending a friendship lost. I think it’s a sign. I lost my actual rhinestone brass knucks last year, and I need to own this ring so I have brass knuckles in my life again. Don’t ask me why I have to make all my jewelry mean something. It’s just more fun that way.

I was leafing through Lucky magazine the other day and these beauties caught my eye… and so of course I checked the site, and there they were on the Lucky ‘Shop Girl’ blog.

As a former ballerina, I’ve infused the ballerina look into my every day wardrobe. (I actually wore pink capezio recital tights with my black tulle skirt to Disco Down last tuesday). I usually roughen up the delicate look by putting something with a bit more hardware on (or anything that can be constituted as the opposite of girly).

Well… it looks like Bona Drag has the perfect rockstar ballet slippers. Oh the magic of studs…

I mean, I rarely wear heels, because I’m always running around and dancing…and also because I like being short. What better use would these ballet slippers have than for running around dancing at a show??

T.S., one of my best guy friends, has recently gotten back from touring with The Sleeping. We got together today to catch up, trade our tour/party stories, and discuss some business regarding his new music venture.

After having our 5 PM “breakfast” at Delicatessen, we visited Sean at Fluevog and spotted these Beat Cassady boots. T.S. wears a lot of grey and black- with his motorcycle jacket, hoodie, and skinny jean look… and a pair of white boots are the perfect contrasting piece to add to the “ba.da” (he’s decided to retire the chucks). He had actually been eyeing the Idol Jack boots for months, but the stark white, iguana embossed leather, and pointy toe may have been a bit much. The soft ivory leather makes these a little more innocuous and easier to pull off, but still has the awesomeness of the leather straps (hello, buckles).

The item description on the site makes it even more boss…as it fits with T.S.’s personality (more or less).
